The city of Fredericksburg is located on the banks of the Rappahannock River about 50 miles southwest of downtown Washington DC and about 60 miles from Richmond VA. Fredericksburg is home to University of Mary Washington.
The town's main historical tourist attraction is the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, the second largest military park in the world. It preserves and interprets the history of four major battlefields around the city of Fredericksburg where over 15,000 people lost their lives. Each of the battlefields (Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania) has a dedicated visitor's center and educational display.
Fredericksburg also offers visitors a host of other attractions including guided walking tours and more exotic 'ghosts themed' tours through the historic downtown area, several wineries and a host of restaurants.
About ten miles north of Fredericksburg is the city of Stafford, the main service town to the huge Marine Corps Base Quantico, which is home to Marine Corps University.
Hotels in Fredericksburg are ideal for town visitors while those in Stafford are ideal for base visitors. All area hotels offer easy access to the I-95.
